Tonight’s edition offers a very Grinch-like look at the holidays – a reminder that this is the time of year not only for shopping and family gatherings and good cheer, but for waves of aggressive cybercrime. Last year, more than 40 million Target customers were targeted by cyberthieves and their credit card information hacked. In this report, we learn that the thieves are still out there – and virtally unstoppable. Ho ho ho.

It’s a full day of animal movies on TCM, a lineup that includes 1946’s The Yearling (4 p.m. ET) and 1943’s Lassie Come Home (6:15 p.m. ET). But in prime time, TCM offers two of the best horse movies ever made: 1944’s National Velvet, starring Elizabeth Taylor (at 10:15 p.m. ET), and, at 8 p.m. ET, 1979’s The Black Stallion, a stunningly photographed movie about a boy and a horse.

Season 5 of Downton Abbey premieres on Jan. 4, 2015. Meanwhile, to set the stage, PBS presents this somewhat self-congratulatory Downton recap, and a celebration of its status as a genuine global phenomenon.

MIDSEASON FINALE: I haven’t seen this in advance, but the advance word is that tonight’s episode, which climaxes with the effort to rescue Beth and Carol from Grady Memorial Hospital, is dark, dark, dark. And Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl, is right in the middle of it all, as usual.

SEASON PREMIERE: Held back until this late in the season, The Mentalist returns with a new vibe: Lisbon and Jane are now a couple. But how they react to that, how their colleagues react, and how they tackle cases differently, that’s something we’ll just have to wait and see. I’d make a prediction – but I’m no mentalist.

Bravo’s first original scripted series arrives 12 years after NBC took control of the onetime fine arts network and later began fouling it with an onslaught of Real Housewives series. Turns out it was well worth the wait...

Great idea: Repeating Horrible Bosses on TV just as its sequel arrives in theaters. It’s a fun romp by all involved, and the only surprise, really, is that this 2011 comedy took three years to spawn a cinematic follow-up. With Jason Bateman at the center, and such fun-loving actors as Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Aniston on the periphery, this is a movie series that could run for several iterations before it turns stale.

This isn’t the Disney animated movie. This is 1946’s Le Belle et la Bete, Jean Cocteau’s moody, atmospheric, visually poetic exploration of the classic fable. It’s not intended as a children’s story, in this telling, but can be enjoyed as such by young viewers – though older ones will find a lot more in it about love, lust, honor and betrayal. Jean Marais stars as the hairy beast, and Belle is played by Josette Day, who wears costumes worthy of the most invent

I’m pointing out this rerun on Showtime 2 just in case you haven’t yet taken the opportunity to see this music documentary. The recreations of late-Sixties Bob Dylan and the Band hanging around Big Pink are unnecessary, but the step-by-step coverage of the efforts of modern musicians to form songs from some of Dylan’s vintage, forgotten lyrics is a true study in creativity. And as with a similar behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the Inside Llewyn Davis soundtrac
