John Sturges, director of the Hour of the Gun film preceding this 1970 movie, directed this Western as well, with a superb cast that includes Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and James Coburn. It’s one of the more iconic Westerns, yet it’s based on a 1954 Akira Kurosawa Japanese film, Seven Samurai, that’s an even more iconic and impressive of an Eastern.

SEASON PREMIERE: Last year, this USA Network drama came out of nowhere, with little promotion or advance warning last summer, to become one of the more intriguing new shows of 2015. This year, for Season 2, the central secret is out: The identity of the mysterious central character is now known, and the show’s protagonist, Elliot (Rami Malek), has to deal with the consequences of that revelation. And, as well, with the consequences of the computer hack that severely disrupted the E Corp bu

There are plenty of All-Stars to keep an eye on this year, from Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve, who’s on pace to achieve his third consecutive 200-hit season, to “old-timers” David Ortiz and Bartolo Colon. Ortiz (pictured) has announced his plans to retire at the end of this season, despite hitting .332 for the Boston Red Sox this year and leading the league in doubles. His long-time friend Colon will be pitching for the opposite team tonight – and the respecti

The first White House TV tour was given by Jackie Kennedy. More than 50 years later, this is more of a history lesson as well, but still with a privileged inside view – and this time, the President himself is one of the tour guides. Check local listings.

Every few years, a documentary crew descends upon Pompeii armed with new scientific and/or photographic equipment, determined to shed new light on the mysteries of the town that was preserved in ash after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Here comes a new one, courtesy of the Science channel. I hope they pay attention to the helpful illustrated menu at the local brothel. When I visited Pompeii, that was one of the things that stayed with me the most.

Okay, the U.K. isn’t usually where we colonists look for Westerns, but the Brits have come up with a crackling good one in Jericho, which arrives here Monday [July 11] on Acorn TV...

SERIES PREMIERE: Here’s a newly imported Western, but one with a very different perspective. Actually, two of them: This British import, which shares only the title with the recent post-apocalyptic cult series, is an eight-part Western. But it’s a Western set in 1870s Yorkshire, so it’s a British Western in setting and in style. And it’s also one that focuses primarily on a woman, played by Jessica Raine.
