This continuation of the 10 [INSERT PLURAL NOUN HERE] That Changed America series of PBS specials has host Geoffrey Baer taking a tour of, and making a case for, 10 U.S. streets with major historical, social and architectural significance. Some, like New York’s Broadway (pictured), are no-brainers. (David Hartman devoted an entire hour to it on New York public TV years ago, superbly.) Others, like the Kalamazoo Mall in Michigan, require a bit more explanation. For a full review, see David

SERIES PREMIERE: This new summer CW fantasy series – imagine Game of Thrones without money to spend – stars relative newcomer Jessica Green, playing a warrior with nascent supernatural powers who is the only survivor of a brutal attack on her family and townspeople. At least it’s not a rerun, or a reality show, so I mention it here. Once.

The idea that a street could “change America” might seem like an overreach until you think about it...

Last time Amy Adams played a character who returned to her small-town home to deal with parental issues, the result was a really nice and rather sweet movie called Trouble With the Curve...

Mondays, this summer, have become the slowest night of TV on TV. And in this small but scorching desert of dog-day summer viewing, one of the reliable, pleasant oases is this long-running improv show. It makes you laugh, without fail. And that means, week in and week out, Whose Line never fails.

In tonight’s new episode, Plum (Joy Nash), after many weeks of trying to either alter or embrace her outer self, finally finds her inner self – and she’s channeling the spirit of Howard Beale from Network. “I’m fat as hell,” she announces defiantly, “and I’m not gonna take it any more.” That’s not a direct quote from the Paddy Chayefsky movie – but it is an exact quote from tonight’s Dietland.

I didn’t know until last week, when I previewed the opening episode of CNN’s latest deep dive into various decades, that the episode had taken its title from my latest book: The Platinum Age of Television. How nice. And it’s also nice that this two-hour episode makes such a strong case for my central thesis, that television has matured mightily in around this current century. So many superb interviewees are shown speaking on the subject, including Breaking Bad creator Vince Gil

Tonight’s episode is called “Love Is the Message,” and the message is clear: In one subplot, Pray Tell visits the AIDS ward at a local hospital. Not as a patient, or as a grieving loved one – but as the organizer of a mood-bolstering cabaret concert.

MINISERIES PREMIERE: Amy Adams stars in this new HBO miniseries, based on the first novel by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, and directed by Jean-Marc Vallee, who directed HBO’s similarly dark and moody Big Little Lies. There’s a mystery afoot, about missing and murdered young girls, and Adams plays a troubled newspaper reporter who returns to her small home town to investigate. Adams, all sullen and scarred – physically as well as emotionally – delivers the best performa

The vote of no confidence against Logan is on the horizon, and the horizon is approaching rapidly – so Roman sets his sights on influencing a somewhat neutral board member. This new episode’s title, appropriately, is: “Which Side Are You On?”
