This 2016 animated musical has some giddy, goofy visuals, but it’s the music, and the performers behind their animal alter egos, that make this cartoon music competition so much fun.  For instance, that’s Reese Witherspoon nailing Katy Perry’s “Firework” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” (pictured). And Scarlett Johannson singing “Call Me Maybe.”

DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Elizabeth Holmes dropped out of Stanford, yet convinced investors to back her Theranos medical startup to the tune of $900 million – and lost it all. This new documentary explains how, and why. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

One of my favorite films, this 1952 musical is something I always squeeze into my Early Film History & Appreciation classes – because, even though it’s a little too “young” for that topic, its treatment of Hollywood’s transition from silent to sound films is brilliant, and reinforces what the students have just learned about 1920s cinema. And Gene Kelly, dancing the title number, is absolutely iconic in both voice and movement.

SEASON FINALE: It’s not unusual for series to end their seasons with cliffhangers, but even The Circus, which ends its fourth season tonight, is doing it – big-time. Donald Trump is poised to enact his first presidential veto, in response to Congress’ rebuke of his declaration of an emergency to divert funding for the border wall.  The Mueller report may be delivered soon (a familiar teasing refrain, but this time it may be more accurate). And more presidential candidate h

There was a lot of concern about whether American Gods, with a new set of showrunners, would return for Season 2 in markedly diluted and inferior form. Well, based on last Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, American Gods is just fine. One particular sequence, showing the inner workings of a fortune-telling machine, was a gorgeous piece of filmmaking, as arrestingly original as the traveling-to-motels-and-diners montage in Manhunter. At the end of the episode, the show’s human hero, Shadow M

DOCUMENTARY SERIES PREMIERE: This new multi-part biography of Richard M. Nixon begins with a look at his early days. It also looks at his forefathers – and his foremothers – to better understand the environment, physically and ethically, from which he emerged.

Because of this show’s major time jump to start the season, many subsequent elements of the plot, and fates of the characters, remain unexplained. Tonight, one of them gets addressed: The X-shaped scars we’ve seen on the bodies of both Daryl and Michonne.

The 1999 disappearance and murder of 18-year-old high school student Hae Min Yee, and the subsequent murder conviction of her former boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was a cold case made red hot by the nonfiction Serial podcast. Tonight, Part 2 of HBO’s even newer look at the case, including what has happened since it was overturned in the wake of the Serial revelations.

SEASON PREMIERE: This fabulously acted, written and directed series returns today, with some major new alliances forming (Axe and Chuck) – and also some new adversarial relationships. I’ve seen the first four episodes of this new Season 4, and all I’ll reveal for now is that the Billions writers are moving lots of its chess pieces around the board, and giving them the space and opportunity to confront new issues and individuals. For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along
