Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film is a movie masterpiece of the first order. Conceptually, it’s one of the best movies ever made – and the fact that we can watch it more than 50 years later and still marvel at it, and accept its imagined future, is as remarkable as anything it shows on screen. Remember, this was all done before CGI. “Open the pod bay doors, HAL…”

In a description of an earlier episode of this fascinating, frightening, futuristic miniseries by Russell T. Davies, I mistakenly wrote that loose-cannon British politician Viv (played so disturbingly well by Emma Thompson) was being elected Prime Minister. Well, I was wrong then, but I’m right now. That’s what happens in tonight’s episode – and for global stability, it’s not a welcome eventuality.

Tonight’s episode has David toying with time, aggressively, to try to right what he sees are the wrongs he and others have committed, and to both alter and save the future. This happens so often in the Marvel universe – both The X-Men and The Avengers franchises already have used time travel to alter destiny – that why shouldn’t it happen in Legion? Except, on this show, the time stream, like the plot, is particularly difficult to follow. But

Irish player Shane Lowry has home-course advantage in this year’s British Open, as it emanates from a very tough course in Northern Ireland. And as I write this, Lowry also has the lead on the final day of play – but the conditions are treacherous, there are six holes to go, and his lead is only half that in terms of strokes. This is when deciding what to attempt, and what to avoid, can make the difference between a final-lap run and a loss of the claret jug. As I typed this, one pla

This entertaining and informative arts documentary series from CNN fills in the cinematic gaps glossed over in its long-running “Decades” series, which began with The Sixties. This movie-centric offshoot began a few decades later, with the 1980s. Now, after last week’s episode devoted to the 1990s, The Movies brings us up to speed, covering both the 2000s and the current decade. It’s the fantasy film era, with fantasies from Marvel and DC Comics and th

At the very end of last week’s episode, Kevin Bacon’s Jackie, after squeezing his unreliable informant and putting him in a dangerously uncomfortable position, was targeted by that same informant. Or, at least, Jackie’s teen daughter was – which may be even worse.

Tonight’s episode takes place in the year 2009, and spends time watching Roger Ailes (Russell Crowe) both manipulating and alienating one of his anchors, Gretchen Carlson (played by Naomi Watts), while helping the network ascension of Glenn Beck (played by Josh McDermitt).

The main coverage today is on NBC, and begins at 11 a.m. ET to catch the major players on Day 3. American J.B. Holmes remains at the top spot, but he’s now tied, with Shane Lowry (pictured), a player with home-field advantage of sorts. This year’s British Open is being played at the Royal Portrush course in County Antrim, Northern Ireland – and Lowry was born and raised in Ireland.

This is the golden anniversary of the first moon landing, and there are lots of related things to watch on TV tonight. (Don’t forget to go outside and take a look at the moon itself, though, to put it all in perspective.) One new documentary is this compiled treat from the Discovery Channel, collecting lots of footage, some of it formerly unseen, from the various Apollo missions.
